History of Yang Ming
Among worldwide shipping companies, Yang Ming is fairly young. Many other maritime companies date back to the 1800s, but Yang Ming was founded in 1972.
After the Taiwan Power Company decided to closed its fourth nuclear facility in July 2018, Yang Ming agreed to provide a service from the Port of Keelung, Taiwan, to the United States for two batches of roughly 20 containers each, holding over 1700 unused nuclear fuel rods. Concerns about the potential for radioactive materials to leak were raised, and the first shipment was accompanied by almost 200 police officers and corporate officers.
In 2019, Yang Ming has added two new 14,000 TEU vessels to its fleet, the YM Warranty and YM Wellspring. Imabari Shipbuilding in Japan built the ships at the cost of about US$99 million each. Sisters of the already supplied YM Wellbeing, YM Wonderland, and YM Wisdom make up the additional tonnage.
In May 2019, as part of its network improvement efforts, the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Port of Vancouver secured an agreement to have containers delivered by rail from the Port of Vancouver eastbound to all of Canada.
About Yang Ming's logo
Yang Ming is a translation of the first two characters of its Chinese name, which is also the name of a well-known Chinese philosopher, 王陽明 (Wang Yang-ming, 1472-1529). The tenet of Wang’s philosophy is the linking of knowing and doing. In Chinese, 陽 is the sun, 明 is brightness, or integrity. Yang Ming believes that in performance, knowing and doing are inextricably linked.
The Yang Ming logo is designed by using YM, the initials of its shortened name. Y shows the company’s ambition to reach the top in innovation, while M suggests it is widely open in dealing with partners and customers.
Yang Ming Subsidiaries
The Yang Ming Group includes a logistics unit (Yes Logistics Corp. and Jing Ming Transport Co.), container terminals in Taiwan, Belgium, Netherlands and the USA, as well as stevedoring services (Port of Kaohsiung, Taiwan). Yang Ming's service scope covers over 70 nations with more than 170 service points.
