HMM Co., Ltd., formerly known as Hyundai Merchant Marine, is a South Korea-based company specialized in the provision of shipping services. With the bankruptcy of Hanjin Shipping in 2016, and the termination of its services, it has become the leading Korean national containers carrier. As of 2020, HMM has built and launched the world's two largest container ships in terms of TEU capacity, the HMM Algeciras with a maximum TEU capacity of 23,964, and the HMM Copenhagen with a maximum capacity of 23,820 TEU.

HISTORY of HMM
In the 1970s , the company was established on March 25, under the name of Asia Merchant Shipping, with a registered capital of 200 million. During the period, it opened a regular liner service between the Far East and the Middle East, established a TRamper liner service between Asia and the Middle East, and introduced a container service between the Far East and the Middle East.
In the 1980s, the routes opened were: Far East/Europe, South Korea/Australia and South Korea/India routes, South Korea/Australia, Canada routes, and full container services between the Far East and the Western United States.
In the 1990s, seven of the world's largest and fastest container ships (5,551 TEU) were purchased. Established Korea-Soviet Shipping, a joint venture company with Chungkyung Shipping, and launched joint operations with SEA-LAND on the Asia-Europe Express route. Acquired two cruise ships, Hyundai Kumgang and Hyundai Pongnae. Opened Hyundai Busan Container Terminal, Korea's largest public container terminal.
In the 2000s, the new 8,600 TEU container ship Hyundai Brave (1.10) was launched, and it began to exchange space with Hanjin Shipping on the east coast of the United States and Asia.
In 2010, it established a joint venture "Netruck Franz" with Hyundai Logiem and SK Energy, joined G6, the world's largest shipping alliance, and established a ship management company "Modern Marine Service Co., Ltd.".
In 2010, the first HMM Algeciras-class container ship of 24,000 TEU was put into service.

On 9 March 2020, Hyundai Merchant Marine board decide to rebrand the company as HMM Co., Ltd.
On 29 April 2020, HMM held the naming ceremony for the newly constructed 23,964 TEU-class container ship HMM Algeciras, the world’s largest container ship at the time of her launch.

Along with Hapag-Lloyd, Ocean Network Express, and Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation, HMM is also a member of THE Alliance. THE Alliance is intended to provide 34 services, directly calling at 81 different ports on a monthly basis.
